Woodworking

Woodworking is a time-honored tradition, but as with other art forms, it has evolved over time. While some artists still prefer traditional methods, others use machinery and new technology to create their designs. We should not discount the artistry involved in either.

Woodworking is essentially an idea, a picture in the artist's mind, which he or she then transforms into a work of art through cutting, shaping, carving, routing, sanding, and staining or treating the wood.

Cabinetry is a form of woodworking, one that involves great skill and attention to detail. It is the craft of making fine furniture such as cabinets and other built in units, chairs, benches, shelves, and decorative pieces.

Carpentry is also skilled woodworking, but on a less intricate scale. Carpentry generally refers to larger structures, such as framing and homebuilding, or rougher pieces such as rustic furniture designs or picnic tables.

Parquetry involves inlaying different types, grains, and colors of wood to create a design. It can be used as stand alone artwork and it is often used for stylized furniture and flooring.

Woodturning is the process of using a lathe to "turn" and shape wood with an assortment of tools that cut or shape the wood as it turns. This process is used for things like table and chair legs, and spindles for banisters.

The hardness and the grain of the wood, its color, the tools and products used, and the skill level of the artists are each important aspects of the finished piece.
