Performing Arts

The performing arts are unique methods of expressing personal passion and creativity. Most people think of actors and singers when they hear the term performing arts, but the arts also include musicians, producers, directors, arrangers, and composers. Theatre, television, radio, dance, comedy, opera, magic shows, and drama, are all types of performing arts, and each production requires a variety of talents.

Actors perform a variety of roles from Broadway productions and musicals to community plays and ensembles, as well as films, television shows, and commercials. They may do voiceovers and animated features as well.

Singers also perform in musicals and create, write, perform and record music. Dancers may engage in traditional or interpretive dance and may be involved in other types of productions. Composers compile music with lyrics and verse, while arrangers use their talents to make the composer's creations into reality through volume, voice, instruments, and tempo.

Directors construe the meaning of the script; decide how it should be expressed, and make changes as needed. They choose costumes and props, and oversee set designs. They choose the cast and crew and supervise the performance of those involved.

Producers, on the other hand are responsible for the financial aspects of stage, television shows and TV movies, as well as movies for the big screen. These are the decision makers; they handle contracts, negotiations, payments, and the business end of show business.

Each one of these is an artist in his or her own rite, and each makes a necessary contribution to the performing arts.
