Painting

Painting was used as a form of communication long before people began to use written language. Besides being a method on communicating, it was also a form of artistic expression, and is believed by many people to be the most significant form or art today.

Painting consists of applying a medium to a surface. It creates a two-dimensional work of art. Paint is a mixture of pigment, moisture, and binders which are blended together to make a moveable, malleable substance, which will later dry to a permanent finish.

The term painting also applies to other aspects of this art form and may include things like preparing the surface that is to be painted, plotting the actual design, preparation of materials and tools to be used, drying processes, and any finish work that may be necessary, such as applying a protective coating to the artwork.

Paint may be applied to various surfaces in many different ways. Many painters favor canvas, paper, wood, fabric, and glass, while others use entirely unique substrates. Some artists also paint wall murals, both interior and exterior. Paint is generally applied by using various brushes and other tools that all create different effects.

Painting applies to works of art, such as still life, portraits, and abstracts, but graphic design and other commercial forms of art, such as sign painting, may also be included. While there are many modern techniques, tools, and materials available for producing commercial artwork, there are some individuals and companies who still prefer the beauty of hand painting.
